PECC

CSIS plays an active role in the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC) including serving as national secretariat for the Indonesian National Committee for PECC (INCPEC). PECC was established to promote regional economic cooperation in the Asia Pacific. Its activities have led to the creation of the inter-governmental process, APEC, or Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation, beginning in 1989. PECC is now regarded as the non-government parallel or Second Track for APEC. CSIS is part of the APEC Study Centers Consortium, and hosts an APEC Study Group. PECCs international secretariat is located in Singapore. The Indonesian National Committee INCPEC (Indonesian National Committee of Pacific Economic Cooperation Council) is the principal non-government vehicle for managing Indonesias economic relationship with the Asia-Pacific region. INCPEC organizes seminars and lectures in Indonesia to educate the public on Asia-Pacific economic cooperation, and especially the APEC process and the multilateral trading system. The CSIS library has a comprehensive selection of APEC publications, WTO publications and books on international trade. More about INCPEC INCPEC was official formed in October 1989 with 89 members. However, Indonesia has been active in PECC activities since its inception in 1981. Its current chairman is Mr Jusuf Wanandi, member of the CSIS Board of Trustees. The objectives of INCPEC is not only to fulfill the functions of PECC but to increase awareness within Indonesiaof the economic opportunities and development in the Asia Pacific and to represent Indonesias interests in the region within international forums. INCPEC members participate in PECCs various study groups, task forces and forums. These activities have created various networks, especially amongst research institutes in East Asia, Australasia, North America, and Latin America.

CAEC

CSIS was a founding member of the Council for Asia Europe Cooperation (CAEC) and actively contributes to its programs and studies. About CAEC CAEC comprises 12 research institutes in Asia and Europe committed to the development of better relations among Europeans and Asians. In keeping with the track-two philosophy of involving specialists and officials (in their private capacities), CAEC is designed to help shape an effective agenda for the Asia-Europe Summit (ASEM) process. CAEC produces studies that focus on areas of common interest to Asiaand Europe, particularly in areas where gaps in writings on Asia-Europe relations have been identified. These studies are submitted to ASEM governments. The Asian part in CAEC is coordinated by the Japan Center for International Exchange.

CSCAP

CSIS was one of the founding institutions of the Council for Security Cooperation in Asia Pacific (CSCAP) in 1993 and currently serves as the national secretariat for CSCAP Indonesia. CSCAP was established as a non-governmental (second track) process for regional confidence building and security cooperation among territories and countries in the Asia Pacific. Its international secretariat is provided by ISIS Malaysia. About CSCAP Indonesia CSCAP Indonesia was established on 11 October 1993 and an inaugural meeting held in Jakarta. Mr Jusuf Wanandi along with Ambassadors Hasnan Habib and Hasjim Djalal, were selected as co-Chairmen. Mr Wanandi and Ambassador Djalal are still serving in that capacity. Currently, CSCAP Indonesia has around 41 members with diversified backgrounds and institutional affiliations, for example, universities, government agencies, NGOs and press representatives, serving in their private capacities. As a National Member Committee of CSCAP, CSCAP Indonesia organises meetings, seminars, lectures and workshops, with a focus on security at domestic and regional levels. It also participates in a variety of working groups. CSCAP Indonesia, along with Australia, serves as the co-chair of the Study Group on Maritime Security, and also as co-chair of the Study Group on Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding along with CSCAP Canada. Consecutively in 2003, 2005, and 2007, CSCAP Indonesia hosted the biannual CSCAP General Conference, which is designed to be an international forum where high ranking officials and security experts from the Asia Pacific region meet every two years to discuss security issues of relevance and to seek new ideas in response to evolving developments in the Asia Pacific security. The forum is usually attended by approximately 250 participants that makes it one of the largest gatherings of its kind. CSCAP Activities CSCAP currently has member committees in twenty countries. In addition to its biannual General Conference, it has various study groups, including on maritime security cooperation, comprehensive and cooperative security, and transnational crime. In December 2007, CSCAP proudly launched its first annual publication, the CSCAP Regional Security Outlook. AEF

The ASEAN Economic Forum (AEF) is a loose association of individual economists and research institutions in the ASEAN region, which undertakes collaborative studies on ASEAN economic cooperation and integration. In an effort to strengthen the AEF, CSIS has agreed to act as its secretariat. Background to AEF The initiative to form AEF began with a series of meetings in 1996 to study the economic impacts of the forest fires in Indonesia and Malaysia on the region, and the challenges to the ASEAN economies posed by volatile international capital movements. AEF is currently undertaking a number of policy studies following intensive discussions with relevant officials at ASEAN Senior Economic Officials Meetings (SEOMs). These studies, which are supported by the World Bank, include trade in services the Rules of Origin and the ASEAN-China free trade area. Economists from all ASEAN countries are participating. Centro Studi Internazionali

The Rome-based Centre for International Studies (Ce.S.I. - Centro Studi Internazionali) was founded by Prof Andrea Margelletti in 2004. Since then, Prof Margelletti has been the Chairman of the Institute. The research activity of the Institute is based on the Open Source Intelligence methodology (OSINT) and is focused on topics such as security, defence, terrorism and counter-terrorism. The areas specifically covered by the Institute include Maghreb, Sub-Saharan Africa, wide Middle East, Balkans, ex-Soviet space and Asia. The Institute works not only with European private clients, but also with Italian institutional counterparts, such as the House of Representatives, the Senate, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Defence, the single Armed Forces and Law Enforcement Agencies.

ASEAN ISIS

CSIS is a founding institute of the ASEAN Institutes of Strategic and International Studies (ASEAN ISIS) and acts as its secretariat. About ASEAN ISIS The group has established a series of meetings that have become a major venue for exchanges of ideas, not only amongst Southeast Asians but also with experts and government officials from other parts of the world. The Asia Pacific Roundtable (APR), with a theme of confidence building and conflict reduction, has been hosted annually in June in Malaysia since the mid 1980s, and has been a forum for ASEAN ISIS from 1994. A Human Rights Colloquium takes place in the Philippinesin the beginning of each year. Since 2000, the ASEAN Peoples Assembly (APA) has also been organized, involving a wide range of civil society organizations (CSOs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and peoples organizations (POs). The first took place in Batam (Indonesia) and the second in Bali(Indonesia). The third was held in Manila (Philippines) on September 24-27, 2003. ASEAN ISIS also organizes regular bilateral seminars with counterpart institutions in China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Indiaand Europe. The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) Southeast Asia Regional Program has provided financial support to promote these activities.
